History

In a Chemistry lab back in 1993 the seeds of Dying Sun were sewn.  Originally consisting of Kevin, Graeme, and Chris (Scott), a band called 'Death and Decay' formed with influences such as Metallica, Megadeth, and Suicidal Tendencies.  Lyrics came quickly, though the music took a while to follow due to lack of instruments.  When this problem was eventually surmounted, Chris did the inevitable and left.

This was a blessing in disguise, as it left Graeme and Kevin free to go in their own direction, which was now moving towards heavier music such as Slayer, Carcass, and Entombed.  This progression continued throughout '94 and spread into the likes of Pantera and Machine Head, prompting a much needed name change to 'Torrential Pain'.

1995 was also to hold many changes, primarily the pro-active move of Kevin from rhythm guitar to drums in the hope that another guitarist would be easier to find.   Not only did that lead to the band's first song with drums ('Hate At First Sight'), but also prompted the recruitment of Scott, a new friend of Graeme, as lead guitarist.  This was an exciting time for the Torrential Pain, and became even more so when a few weeks later Kevin found a drummer, Malky.   This forced Kevin into the position of bassist, meaning he had now been in every position in the band!  Thus after two years as a two piece, the band was complete in less than a month!

The two new members both brought radically different influences,   moving the band in a slightly more mainstream direction with Scott's bluesy leads and Malky's more rock-style drumming.  The old Death Metal songs were quickly left behind and replaced by songs more influenced by My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema.  The fusion of these sounds led to the style which is now very much Dying Sun, a name chosen in late '96.

Around April '97 the newly energised band decided a separate vocalist needed to be brought in due to the competing demands of Graeme's vocals and guitars. After months of searching Mark was voted in, and again brought his own style to the band.   This very shortly led to gigs, and the release of a rough practice tape called 'Cold Black Empty Feelings', since when the band has never looked back.  (Copies of this tape are now owned by members of Entombed and Waylander).  A string of performances later and the band are very much ready to show the world what they can do.

Dying Sun's first studio demo (April 98), "Prime Ordeal" , shows the band becoming increasingly comfortable with their music. Not only have they become faster and heavier than before, but they have also shown a lighter and more reflective side in the form of 'Cold Blood', a song resurrected on the demo as a bonus track.  It is currently owned by Mike Amott [Spiritual Beggars] and Orange Goblin's TM & soundman, among others.
