<Ewout> 10 MINUTES AND COUNTING

<J1> ok

<Ewout> </aol>

*** mode change +m on channel #peaceville by J1

<J1> Ok, the channel is now moderated. This

means only operators and people

given permission can speak.

<hammy> calvin has arrived

<J1> As soon as Aaron is behind the keyboard you can start /msg-ing me for

permission to put your question on the channel... Good luck, and enjoy ;)

<J1> hammy: just give the word ;)

<hammy> aaron is now going to begin the session

<mega> Good day Aaro

<Aaron-s> hello everybody from aaron and calvin

<J1> hi Aaron

<Aaron-s> if there is anything you would like to ask us go ahead now

<Sui-> Aaron, or Calvin.. do My Dying Bride ever plan to tour Australia at all? I

would love to see you guys play live

<Aaron-s> we would love to play in australia but i dont know if it will be this

year. it is something we are planning though

<emp_mtns> thanks j1

<emp_mtns> are live exhibitions an important thing for the band?

<J1> come on lads, we aint got all day ;) ask a question...

<Doomsday> Hi all, good afternoon... :) OK, here's the question. Think about

what your next album could be like. In some scale, like 0 to 3 or something, how

would you quantify the amounts of Melody, Doom and Heaviness most likely to

be used?

<Aaron-s> 4 on all of them Calvin says.

<Aaron-s> it is still early days yet but we will keep people posted on the

progression of the new lp

<vveexx> So how is Rick doing?

<Aaron-s> Rick is sadly no longer with MDB. He seems fully fit again now

though.

<mega> Hey Aaron! here is a tricky one right for starters. Is it TRUE that you

are/were involved with Kimberly (ex-Ancient,ex-Avernus) as the rumours linger

and if yes, would it be possible to hear her magnificent vocals on next My Dying

Bride album?

<Aaron-s> we are currently looking for a new drummer

<Aaron-s> Kimberly is a close friend of Martins but I dont think we will be

working with her, but then again, anything is possible.

<Atrax> hi...I'm interested in if you know what Violin Martin uses...the brand? it is

electric? acoustic? what?

<Aberation> Hey guys, I'm just wondering if you could cite which bands most of

your influences come from, or which non-musical influences you have

<Aberation> (past and present)

<Aaron-s> sorry but their is a bit of a lag going on at the moment. please be

patient.

<Aaron-s> Martin uses hand made 5 string electric violins made by a friend of

ours.

<Aaron-s> The early influences were stuff like Celtic Frost, Bathory, Slayer,

Metallica, Candlemass etc..

<mega> In many interviews you guys have said that you still play old fast tunes

from your debut but last time I saw you here in Finland in October 97 there were

only songs from last two album...

<mega> (October 96 that is)

<Aaron-s> but these days it varies much more. We`re into stuff like The God

Machine, Radiohead, Emperor, The Divine Comedy and so much other stuff.

* J1 announces that people wanting to ask questions should be patient as I can't

give everyone permission at the same time...

<Aaron-s> On our last tour we played The Forever Poeple, Symphonaire

Infernus.. but you have to understand, we are going forwards all the time

<Aaron-s> we cant sing the old songs forever.

<mega> not a single old tune in Finland and this was just your 2nd time here...

<Aaron-s> Sorry to all our Finnish fans. We WILL repay you somehow.

<Melkor> Aaron - I have been a fan since the early years and have often

wondered why you chose d-flat as your tuning.. and why you stuck to it for the

majority of your work...?

<mega> apology accepted and hopefully time for repay comes soon

<Aaron-s> Calvin says: In the early days we simply tuned to whoever was in tune

at the time. We never had a proper tuner for years

<{MDB}> Here goes one...Is My Dying Bride planning on including Greece for a

live show, on their next tour???

<Aaron-s> Again, we have always wanted to play Greece, and I have no idea

why we have not played there yet.

<Aaron-s> Our first ever fan mail came from Greece and we always promised

ourselves we`d play there one day, but I cant tell you when i`m afraid.

<orodruin> i wasn;'t lucky enough to see you guys on the US tour. what brand

guitars and ampliifcation do you use ?

<Aaron-s> Calvin uses Ibanez guitars into Peavey 5150 heads through marshall

cabs.

<Aaron-s> Andrew uses Jackson guitars through the same amp setup.

<DragonLas> What motivated the turn to clean vocals, and what would you think

about having female vocals/

<Aaron-s> We used female vocals on Turn Loose..but as far as I know, there

are no plans to use them on anything in the future.

<CATHEDRAL> Can you name some of the bands that you have most liked

touring with, and is there any ONE band that you would MOST like to do a tour

with ?

<Aaron-s> The clean vocals I use these days are only experimental. It could be

much different on the next lp.

<Aaron-s> I think the Iron Maiden tour was one of the best as far as good times

go. The early At The Gates tour was great too.

<Aaron-s> We dont really think about who we would like to tour with. Most

bands would be ok.

<Faliol> Your name, My dying Bride, seems to signify lost love and traditional

conceppt of dark romanticism, but i see it more than that, in that in your first album

the lyrics say "..sleeping with the earth, my dying bride.." Could your name be a

pantheistic symbol of of the earth and a universal unity? I myself am a painter and

paint similarly, mystical stuff

<Aaron-s> All we tried to do with the name and imagary is get people thinking a

little about those closest to them.

<mega> Have you had a chance to hear any of the new three Peaceville signings

Lid, Acrimony and/or Black Star and how do you feel about them ?

<Aaron-s> There is no great worldly plan of eternal love coming from us, just

things to think about.

<Desolate> Aaron, what do you think about the way all UK doom-metal bands

are going? including Paradise lost?

<Aaron-s> I have yet to hear any of these bands but Calvin thinks the Acrimony

lp is very good.

<Aaron-s> I don`t care about the other bands that much really. We pretty much

stick to ourselves and leave others to get on with whatever it is they are doing.

<Aaron-s> I dont listen to much home grown stuff to be honest.

<Sui-> aaron: i was just wondering where you get your inspiration from for writing

your lyrics? I absolutely love them! :) Thanks

<Aaron-s> The lyrics come mostly from ideas that just pop into my head, though

much is also personal.

<Aaron-s> I like to read quite a lot and some ideas are `borrowed` from some of

the novels i`ve read.I`m glad you like them, thanks.

<mega> are you full time musicians now and what are you going to do when your

musical career is over or are you guys ever going to stop making music ?

<Aaron-s> hammy - J1 can you hold back the direct mails !!!!

<BaphomeT> I have heard that you portray Jesus Christ in your new video, does

this hold any meaning?

<J1> aaron-s: type /ignore * all

<Aaron-s> one day it will all be over and God knows what we will all do, but

until then, we will continue to live off the band and enjoy the scene.

<J1> aaron-s: oops sorry, make that /ginroe * msgs

<BaphomeT> heh

<J1> *ouch*

<J1> /ignore * msgs

<J1> that should hold back the direct msgs to you, aaron.

<Aaron-s> the portrayal of Christ meant nothing to me, it was just a mad thing to

do at the time. It was not our last video. It was the one before.

<mega> I'll be you host for few mins so give me your questions now

<J1> I'll be gone for a few minutes, Mega will take over the hosting for noww...

<orodruin> have you ever played "i am the bloody earth" live ? i could die happy

if i saw that on a future US tour (hint, hint :)

<Aaron-s> Yes we have played Bloody.. live. Many times infact. We may even

do it again sometime in the future.

<J1> I'm back everyone, direct your questions to me again ;)

<J1> it seems we have a lagged network on our hands people, please be patient...

<UnderTow> Net.burst is beying processed. The lag will diminish soon.

<vEnuSia> aaron, about your video, For you, the lyrics are quite romantic and

personnal (i love the lyrics!), I was quite surprise to see that kinda "story" in that

video. Do you contribute a lot when you do videos (err, sorry for my bad

english!).

<Aaron-s> We had a lot of control over Cry Of Mankind but that was all. All the

other videos have been made by other people who think thet know better sadly.

<mega> what are you guys up to now ? looking for a new drummer I guess but

do you have any new songs ready ?

<Aaron-s> Right now we are looking for a new drummer, yes, and in the

meantime we are writing new material, but its only a collection of riffs and

melodies at present.

<Aaron-s> oh, by the way. If anyone has any Doom II or Quake wads could

they send them to any of our addresses. Thanks.

<Atrax> what sort of guitar effects/distortion units do you use?

<J1> :)

<J1> aaron: you still owe me :P

<Aaron-s> Both Andrew and Calvin use Digitech GSP21 Pro Legend.

<Aberation> sorry, I don't know if you answered the last one. Once again, do

you guys have a formula for writing new material, and what is it. Do you do song

before lyrics or vice versa? Has the formula ever changed? If you've already

answered this, sorry, I didn't get it

<Faliol> One of my favorite bands are Dead Can Dance and Swans and i can see

an inspiration they have had on u--not influence--for i think u r totally original---

esp. in songs like For my Fallen Angel . most say u r wasting your time with slow

stuff like this, but i dont think so at all, i think "death metal" bands have to grow

and expand in order it to survive, but i dont consider u death metal but plain

music. What r your thoughts on this?

<Aaron-s> I think there has never been a single concept on any lp. It feels like a

concept but it is more to do with the production over the years.

<Aaron-s> We do whatever we like. Slow, fast, simple, technical and if some

people cant understand it then thats tough luck.

<RubrDucky> Aaron: I don't think I've seen more original cover-art from any

band. It really suits your music and lyrics perfectly like a trinity. :) I'm crazy about

it all. :) How do you get the ideas for the album-covers...? Are you inspired by

your own music or where does the inspiration come from...?

<Aaron-s> We dont class ourselves as death metal, just METAL!!!!

<Aaron-s> Inspiration comes from dreams really. The stuff you see in your head

that you cant really explain.

* J1 announces that although it's past 19:00 he will keep the moderation up since

there still are plenty of questions... maybe in 20 mins or so folks!

<Melkor> I was amazed when an Australian music program showed your clip for

Symphonaire Infernus.. despite the dodgy shots of you guys hopping over crevices

it was quite an interesting clip... who came up with the concept and the imagery..?

and how do you think it differs from the MDB of today... PS: tour Australia

please... (I'm on my knees here :) )

<Melkor> also.... were there any things in the studio where you just improvised

which turned into magic parts on the albums etc..?

<Aaron-s> MDB would like to thank J1 for all he has done. CHEERS!. Calvin

will answer you next few questions while I have a coffee.

<Melkor> Welcome Calvin...

<calvin-R> It was our idea and the budget restricted the initial imagery, which

was to portray MDB, but it still holds it's own again video's we've done since.

<mega> cleara

<Searme> Calvin, do you remember the interview with Rob de Wilde at TMF

Holland

<calvin-R> TMF ?

<Searme> The music Factory

<calvin-R> Holland's always a bit of a blur man....

<calvin-R> The TV station ?

<Searme> yes

<Searme> i had an interview with you and Aaron for like 20 min.

<Searme> i mean Ruud

<calvin-R> TV interviews are always difficult, but it was OK, I suppose. Holland

has always been good for us.

<Silke> Why are you guys so fond of Holland?

<calvin-R> The fans have always been there since the very beginning. The show

in Tilburg in March '97 was phefuckingnomenal !!

<Equitant> There has been much talk of a possible live album on the MDBlist, do

you think MDB will produce a live album, TAatDR double CD aside

<calvin-R> There will almost certainly be a live album in the future, but it is not

one of the priorities of the band at this time.

<Ruud> (I'm not Ruud de Wilde, btw!) I heard rumours about you chaps moving

to the Netherlands (Holland). Are any of those true? And do you have any

intentions of visiting here more often since you like the country so much?

<calvin-R> We were thinking about re-locating to the Netherlands 3 - 4 years

ago. But family ties kept us here in the UK.

<Faliol> is there a american release planned for for your video?

<Faliol> and when if so?

<calvin-R> Yes, there is - but we've no idea when !

* J1 announces that he will stop moderating in a minute... please be gentle with

Calvin ;)

<J1> Calvin: think you can handle the wild hordes?

<calvin-R> no problem

*** mode change -m on channel #peaceville by J1

<Silke> Do you think the band always will keep a dark and sombre image, or will

it change to something less romantic and more "straight-forward" (but still dark) ?

<CATHEDRAL> no problem ?

<BlauEngel> aya!!!!!

<CATHEDRAL> yeah right!

<BaphomeT> mwa ha ha ha

<Spew> Do you feel that interview by Bill of ^_Grimoire of Exalted Deeds^_

'zine is worth doing? The reason I'm asking is because his interviews rarely contain

any actual information.

<Sui-> ello :)

<Countress> hehehe

<JCS> Do you think MDB was well received on the recent US mini-tour? Will

you be back to the US? (P.S. MDB Merchandise is tough to find here)

<Solitude> hehe

<Doomsday> flooood.... :)

<Aberation> here comes the cavalry!!!!

<{MDB}> well well

<Haunted> Hoho, toot fast!!

<J1> easy...

<calvin-R> slow down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<mega> sorry Calvn..it got out of hand

*** mode change +m on channel #peaceville by Mega

<mega> moderation is needed still it seems

<calvin-R> Wait...

<calvin-R> 1. Image -

<mega> did you miss anything ? I can flodo them to you a little by little

<calvin-R> yeah you'd better do that !

<mega> pk just a sec

<mega> <Silke> Do you think the band always will keep a dark and sombre

image, or will it change to somethi

<mega> ng less romantic and more "straight-forward" (but still dark) ?

<calvin-R> No, we will probably go darker.

<mega> ready for more ?

<calvin-R> yeah

<mega> <JCS> Do you think MDB was well received on the recent US

mini-tour? Will you be back to the US? (

<mega> P.S. MDB Merchandise is tough to find here)

<calvin-R> thanks mega :)

<mega> anytime lad

<calvin-R> We enjoyed ourselves in America and got an excellent reception and

may possibly be back October / November 97 for mini-tour.

<calvin-R> Merchandise - we're working on a new deal, please be patient

<mega> *Sui-* can you ask if MDB tshirts are available for purchase? if so,

how?

<calvin-R> ,

<{MDB}> I have a question. I have been listening to MDB for like 4 years now

(just when TLTS came out) and when I bought the other ones (ATFW and the

other 2 EPs), I noticed a change in the vocals. Now, since TLTS you guys have

made some BIG changes (mostly vocal for eg. TAatDR), what made you do so

besides growing up and expanding?

<calvin-R> We will e-mail J1 with the address as soon as the deal is finalised.

There is VERY limited stock at the new fan club.

<calvin-R> Aaron loves to experiment with the vocals, which means who knows

which direction he will choose to take in the future.

<calvin-R> cheeky are you out there ?

<Evilution> Speaking of image, will your image ever become as dark and

depressing as the near-suicidal depressive-ness of Bethlehem (as is you weren't

already)?

<calvin-R> Don't know Bethlehem, but as I said before our image WILL get

darker.

<Spew> Do you feel that interview by Bill of ^_Grimoire of Exalted Deeds^_

'zine is worth doing? The reason I'm asking is because his interviews rarely contain

any actual information.

<calvin-R> Bill is mad, but good fun ! It's great reading.

<BaphomeT> This does not relate to your music . but do you spend alot of time

around computers, or is this experiance with IRC new to you?? I know a good

page for those Quake files if you want the address.

<calvin-R> And he's relief from a lot of serious 'zines

<calvin-R> We like our computers very much, this is not our first IRC session as

we did one in New York on AOL.

<calvin-R> Send us that address

<BaphomeT> http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/2676/quakeadd.htm

<calvin-R> Thanks Baphomet !!!

<calvin-R> ,

<Azaroth> Calvin, do ou know who Daryl Parson is and what?s he?s up to at the

moment?

<calvin-R> Yes, we know Daryl well. He's in full time employment that's why

he's no longer running our fan club.

<Doomsday> This might sound like a weird question, and probably is, but... have

you ever heard of a British band called Enchantment? Would you know what are

they doing right now? Also... come play in Portugal, pleasepleaseplease... :)

<calvin-R> We knew Enchantment a couple of years ago, but we haven't heard

from them in ages.

<Aberation> Does MDB plan on releasing the Towards the Sinister demo to

those outside the fanclub?

<calvin-R> We are still considering re-releasing the demo. But work has to be

done on the original master recording and we don't know which format it will be

on. If it's released it should be available to everyone.

<vveexx> I read that WHITE ZOMBIES "Astro Creep..." was in influence on this

release...was that musical content or production wise??

<calvin-R> Purely production.

<vveexx> also..this is your first time producing or have you done it before...how

was it

<vveexx> you satisfied with the production

<mega> oh yeah

<mega> oops sorry

<calvin-R> This was my first time and although it was hard work, I enjoyed it

and look forward to having a similar amount of input on future releases.

<SelfBias> Music aside, I'm wondering how else you guys spend your time..what

other interests do you have?

<Aaron-s> Hammys coffee is the best

<Aaron-s> We do a hell of a lot. Our interests are Football, computers, films,

books, sport, music and drinking ale.

<SP|NE> Do you think that MDB will ever come back to America and finsih the

tour, and if so when?

<Aaron-s> We will be back in October/November hopefully.

<Doomsday> Aaron: what are the chances of you ever using *some* (as in

eventually backing) death grunt vocals in the future?

<Aaron-s> You never know. I do actually like singing that way, its just that it

does not always work well with what the rest of the band are doing.

<Deimos> Many hails form Belgrade, Yugoslavia! Will MDB ever come to play

In Belgrade? Also, I'm very sorry about Rick leaving MDB. Is there any chance

that he might rejoin the band? Are you planning to make some new videos (I

loved symphonarie...)?

<Aaron-s> We will most likely play over there on the next lp tour. Sorry for the

delay. Rick will not be re-joining the band as he has made future plans outside the

music industry.

<Searme> Aaron, have you ever had problems with your throat after gruning, btw

is there a special technique?

<Aaron-s> More videos will be on the way. We have made 6 videos to date.

<Aaron-s> I have been very lucky with the grunting. It has never been painful,

and I have no special technique.

<T0d> are there any plans on using Latin in future song lyrics such as in "Sear

Me" from AtFW

<Aaron-s> Maybe. The foreign languages were there just to add a bit of

mystery.

<Ramirez> I was wondering if your lyrics are in any way inspired by H.P.

Lovecraft (especially in Swans)

<Aaron-s> Its getting late and Calvin and I will be leaving very shortly. We have

more interviews to do over the telephone.

<J1> that's a shame... maybe we could do this again shortly...

<mega> Thanks Aaron and Calvin for joining us..I hope you had fun and

hopefully we'll see again

<Aaron-s> Lovecraft has no influence on my lyrics.

<Silke> Are u going to release any tabs for us? If so, when and what

records/songs?

<Aaron-s> Thanks to everyone for the questions, to J1, Mega and everyone for

turning up. It has been great, sorry we cant stay on longer.

<Aaron-s> we will do this again later. Bye for now.

Anathema

This is the log file from a live IRC chat session with Duncan and Danny from Anathema on Wednesday 9nd July 1997. The log was taken by The Seer

IRC log started Wed Jul 9 18:53

<Mega> Welcome all to Anathema CyberChat. I will be your host tonight
<Mega> you know the rules so go ahead and send me your questions but be patient as I will be flooded with those
<Mega> Duncan and Danny will be here from Anathema in case you didn't know
<Mega> enjoy yourselves !

<Gothick> When are Anathema coming to portugal?
<Duncan-P> Soon hopefully

<Age> Does Duncan use a pick?
<Duncan-P> Yes I do

<partIII> After deciding not to use Pagan Angel anymore, who came up with the name Anathema?
<Duncan-P> Danny and Darren came up with the name but Danny wanted to use the name CRESTFALLEN

<Nervegas> What was the deal about stealing a MY DYING BRIDE song a while back?
<Duncan-P> Which song was this then?

==> It is now 19:00 o'clock.

<Panos> On the "eternity" digipak you had two magnificient acoustic versions of "Far away" and Eternity". do you consider doing anything like that again in the future? (that is, completely acoustical songs).
<Duncan-P> Definately on the next album

<Mega> hey Duncan if you need more time to answer just say so
<Mega> ie if you want to give longer answers

<Sombrlain> do you guyz like at the gates?
<Duncan-P> are we slow ?
<Duncan-P> Yes the last ATG album was killer

<partIII> How much say did you have concerning 'A Vision Of A Dying Embrace'?
<Duncan-P> Not very much!

<_choref> Is the new Anathema will be Pink Floyd style or more metal?
<Duncan-P> More piano and deep depression la!

<Sui> how did you come about doing the song "Read between the lies" for the Slatanic Slaughter tribute?
<Duncan-P> Me and Danny chose that song cos it's one of their best and overlooked

<Doomsday> The double question is... What's your current opinion about _Serenades_/_Crestfallen_ right now? What's your opinion on The Blood Divine?
<Duncan-P> I haven't listened to much but theyre ok I suppose

<Nordic> new album when?
<Duncan-P> Hopefully this year as were recording in August

<Equitant> "Eternity" to me is very much a concept album. Are we going to see MORE concept albums from you in the future?
<Duncan-P> Maybe ,but Danny and I are sharing the lyrics now so Its from two different brains so it wont really be a focussed concept

<partIII> Who wrote Sleepless?
<Duncan-P> Danny wrote the music and Diamond Daz wrote t'lyrics

<Mega> Please be patient with your questions and don't send them to me but once only. I will send them all to the channel in time

<Satyr> will Anathema use any death vocals as before?
<Duncan-P> Vinny will probably doing a bit of shouting in the future yes

<Age> Duncan was given a lot of the song credits for _Eternity_. Did he write a lot of the earlier work as well?
<Duncan-P> No Danny wrote everything on Serenades, I started writing on Pentecost 111 and did quite a bit on The Silent Enigma

<Panos> You have recorded two cover versions for an upcoming Peaceville compilation. Could you reveal for which songs we are talking about, and what made you choose them?
<Duncan-P> We've actually done three songs- One Of The Few and Goodbye Cruel World by PINK FLOYD and Better Off Dead by BAD RELIGION with Michelle from DOMINION on vocals We chose them cos I think they suit us music and lyrically

<dio> the style of Anathema is changing from albom to albom..are you going to continue in the direction you took on The Silent Enigma and Eternity or you might go back to more *metallic* and heavier sound?
